Chiropractor Urgent and Emergency Care

Pain is the primary motivator for people to seek chiropractic care. Pain doesn't respect or even acknowledge an individual's schedule or normal chiropractic office hours.  

Many times over the years I have been contacted by patients, friends, family members, and strangers who were in pain at inopportune times such as late at night, over weekends, or on holidays.  

Some individuals mistake convenience for urgent or urgent for an emergency. Obviously, there are situations that warrant a trip to the emergency room such as:

• Chest pain or difficulty breathing
• Uncontrolled bleeding or deep wounds
• Severe head or eye injuries
• Sudden or severe abdominal pain
• Suspected broken bones
• Sudden or severe burns or severe allergic reactions
• Sudden or severe seizures or 
• loss of consciousness
• Sudden or severe changes in vision or speech
• Suspected stroke or heart attack symptoms
• Suspected overdose or overdose

When it comes to complaints that may cause someone to contact a chiropractor seeking urgent care, the following signs and symptoms suggest a visit to the ER is in order:

• Sudden or severe headache
• Sudden or severe difficulty moving any part of your body
• Back pain with inability to defecate or urinate
• Severe or unrelenting low back or neck pain (especially if they radiate down both arms or legs)

Most emergency rooms will not order MRI's unless there is a suspicion of a fracture or a neurological involvement and quite often don't even complete xrays.  It is not unusual for individuals to spend hours and quite a bit of money at an emergency room or urgent care to walk away with muscle relaxors and no understanding of what is the problem.
