Neck Complaints

Neck pain is a frequent complaint of patients presenting for care. There are many causes of neck pain which range from acute injuries to chronic conditions. Neck pain can be extremely uncomfortable due to it being difficult to rest your neck.

Symptoms related to neck involvement:

  • Stiffness or tenderness in the neck

  • Sharp or dull pain
  • Headaches
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Muscle spasms or knots
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
  • Fatigue or sleep disturbances
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory problems

Discomfort in the neck is called cervicalgia. Neck pain may involve the joints in the spine, soft tissue ( muscles, discs, ligaments, fascia, and tendons) and nerves. Pain or numbness that shoots up into the head, arms, and hands or down to the shoulder blade suggests a nerve involvement.

  • How long have you experienced complaints?
  • Was there an identifiable injury?
  • Where do you feel the pain?
  • How often do you notice the sensation?
  • Past and current medical history
  • Lifestyle

Headaches are often accompanied by additional complaints such as neck and TMJ pain as well as posture distortions.

Those that can be traced to disorders in the neck are called cervicogenic headaches.

We have had great success in treating headaches related to the neck through the use of lifestyle education, laser therapy, and physical treatments.
