Neck pain is a frequent complaint of patients presenting for care. There are many causes of neck pain which range from acute injuries to chronic conditions. Neck pain can be extremely uncomfortable due to it being difficult to rest your neck.
Discomfort in the neck is called cervicalgia. Neck pain may involve the joints in the spine, soft tissue ( muscles, discs, ligaments, fascia, and tendons) and nerves. Pain or numbness that shoots up into the head, arms, and hands or down to the shoulder blade suggests a nerve involvement.
Headaches are often accompanied by additional complaints such as neck and TMJ pain as well as posture distortions.
Those that can be traced to disorders in the neck are called cervicogenic headaches.
