Chiropractic manipulation

chiropractor

"Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained specialists (chiropractors) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The goal of this procedure, also known as spinal manipulation, is to improve spinal motion and improve your body's physical function." 1

Many people associate chiropractic with " adjustments" which is understandable.  The chiropractic adjustment is also called "manipulation", "mobilization" and " cracking"

The basic goal of an adjustment is to reset a joint and by doing so allowing the body to communicate with itself.  Locating the segments which are not functioning properly is based on much more than " where it hurts" and quite often it is discovered that the pain reported is produced in other areas.

Through the patient history, presentation, report of symptoms and detailed examination, subluxations are identified and corrected.  A chiropractic subluxation is also called segmental dysfunction as it refers to the union of two structures ( the segment) not moving ( functioning) properly.  This disorder can cause local ior radiating pain as well as tingling, pins and needles, numbness and loss of strength.  It is common to discover other health issues which are attributed to an imbalance in these dysfunctioning areas.

Dr. DeFries utilizes several techniques and therapies to restore function.  Manipulation of the joints ( spine, limbs, pelvis, jaw and head ) is performed manually but can also be done using a tool ( activator ) if the patient requests alternative methods.

Adjustments are typically painless but they can be awkward initially.  Due to the nature of restoring motion to improperly moving segments, an immediate decrease in pain can be felt but also some soreness may arise for several hours after.

As the communication is corrected between the structures and the brain, sensory signals ( pain ) which may have been suppressed may now reach the brain and cause some discomfort.  This is a normal part of the response to healing.

As treatment progresses and tissues start to become accustomed to moving properly,  patient typically report a gradual decreas ein pain intensity, duration and frequency.

Some of the great byproducts of chiropractic care that is shared by many patients are:

  • Decreased allergies
  • More regular bowel movements
  • More regular and less painful periods
  • Decreased migraines and headaches
  • Increased energy
